The history of the Carnatic region (southeastern India / Tamilnadu) and the Nawabs of Arcot is an integral part of the history of the Mughals and the Indian sub-continent, and the role it played in the eventual colonization of this land by the British. The Nawabs of Arcot ruled the area from 1692-1855 as the subahdars of the Mughal empire. In later years, they exercised their powers independent of the empire.A number of monographs and articles have been published about this important period and the history of the Carnatic. However, the contribution of the Nawabs of Arcot during this declining period of Muslim power in South Asia has not been addressed adequately.I stumbled on two manuscripts – Tashrīḥ al-Ansāb and Shajarah-e-Ḥasan – by chance which provide a detailed genealogy of the Nawabs of Arcot and their families. These manuscripts also provide substantial details about key individuals which are not found in any other books and articles published in the past. The original text in Urdu of both manuscripts are reproduced in this book along with translation into English of the initial parts. This book is a treasure trove for historians and researchers of the Carnatic region. The contents can provide original material for dissertations by students and professors of south Indian history. Read more
